What Is CO2ign Art?

Support Artists.

CO2ign Art is an entirely new way to buy digital art. (Patent pending!) Artists can share their work on social media or other platforms, allowing everyone to enjoy it, but when someone particularly likes a piece, they can use CO2ign Art to purchase a digital signed copy. It’s similar to purchasing a print, but 30% of the list price goes to the artist, a much higher margin than artists generally receive from print sales.

Support the Earth.

CO2ign Art entirely avoids the materials and shipping cost of print sales and the energy cost of NFT sales. In addition, 50% of the list price of CO2ign Art goes to voluntary carbon credits from projects certified by leading environmental standards organizations, such as Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard. Some projects could involve reforestation, transitions to renewable energy, capturing methane, or storing carbon in concrete. Each purchase funds credits from a specific project, and each credit represents one metric ton of CO2 not in the atmosphere.

Couldn’t someone donate to the artist directly, sign up for their Patreon, or purchase a commission?

Sure, if the artist offers those options! We don’t expect CO2ign Art to be a complete replacement for other ways of supporting artists.

We do expect it will be an appealing way to support artists for many people though. It’s low-effort for the artist, since they simply upload their existing work at no cost, and for the buyer, since they can see something they like and buy it immediately. And, of course, it’s helping the environment as well!

Why would someone buy CO2ign Art when they could just right click and save the image?

Why would someone buy a signed print for more money than a mass-printed one? It’s the same principle.

The way we think of it is that while someone may already be able to see and download an image for free, CO2ign Art allows them to say “I really like and identify with this artwork” in a way that directly supports the artist. Some people won’t find value in that, and that’s fine. But many people (like us!) are eager to better support the digital artists they follow, and CO2ign Art is for them. Around half the people we surveyed said they would be interested in buying CO2ign Art.

Don’t people want a physical thing for their money?

Some people do, of course! But we’ve noticed that often people don’t actually want stuff as much as they just like the work of an artist. Many people want to support artists in a way that expresses that appreciation. (Seriously, who has enough wall space to put up prints of all the art they like?)
